November 2009 Scuttlebutt

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Dear Fellow Comrades,

We had a good meeting this month. We had no unfinished business from last month and only a couple of new items to cover. At the beginning of the meeting all members congratulated Herb Zimmer for being awarded the WDVA Veterans Life Time Achievement Award. Herb was a great choice for this award. It seems like he is always doing something for our veterans. Congratulations Herb. It was good to see Lloyd Meinen at our monthly meeting. Rumors had it that he had surgery for triple bypass. Glad it turned out to be only a stint that they put in. Take it easy Lloyd; hope to see you at several future meetings.

The entry forms for Voice of Democracy, Patriot Pen and Teacher of the Year Awards are all at the schools. I am just waiting for them to be returned by the 1st of November. Sam and his wife have already volunteered to help judge the Patriot Pen entries. If anyone else would like to assist, please let me know. All entries have to be judged and forwarded to District by the 15th on November.

We have started work on updating the web page for the Veterans Center. It has gotten quite outdated and will be updated hopefully by the first of the year. The cost of postage to mail the Scuttlebutt to all members is getting extremely expensive. We would like to start posting a monthly calendar and all the articles that currently appear in the paper will be on-line. We will also have an archives section so members can look at back issues if they need. The web site is www.rlvets.org and has links to the various veterans’ organizations at the center, links to Departments, National and many more interesting sites. If anyone has any questions, please contact me.

I continue to work on a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help Deployed NGU families if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist. I now have two electricians who have volunteered. We sure could use some other help.

**** If you know of any member who is sick or could use some sunshine, please contact Steve Clark at 715-719-0218.

Upcoming Event:

  • 11 Nov 2009 – Veterans Day (Stew Feed at RL Veterans Center & Free Meal for Veterans at Applebee’s)
  • 17 Nov 2009 – Monthly Meeting **7:00PM**

November 2009 Scuttlebutt

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Hi Comrades,

We had a very good meeting this month and got a lot of business taken care of. It was good to have our Adjutant back and keeping me inline once again. We did gain 3 new members this month; Marc Helwig (Hayward), John Oscar (Trego) and Thomas Shipman (Prescott). Welcome aboard; hope to see you at one of our monthly meeting. We still need one more new member to be 100% for the year.

The Fall Conference was held in Appleton, WI on 08-10 October. Tom Johnson attend the Service Officer Training held on the 08th and gained a lot of information. If any member knows of someone who needs assistance filling out the forms to apply for a disability, have them contact Tom as he has all the forms. We also had 5 other members attending the Fall Conference. John Fredrickson, Lenny Shier, Terry McNitt, Joe Anderson and I all attending and gained a lot of information.

At our monthly meeting, it was decided that we would once again donate to all the various DAV Veterans programs as in the past. Donations are going to VAMC Minneapolis, VAMC Tomah, King Wheel Chair Repair Shop, King Home, King Day, DAV Christmas Store, DAV Child Welfare, DAV News and American Disabled for Life Memorial in Washington, DC. We also will have donations going to the High ground and VA Homeless Center in Chippewa Falls. These are all very important programs and need all of our assistance.

Also at our monthly meeting, it was decided that we would once again have our yearly Christmas Party. Our adjutant has been told to make it happen and if at all possible to have it in late December or January. I have been informed that the date of 19 December at the Cameron House Restaurant has been reserved. The meal will be chicken and BBQ ribs and the cost will be the same as last year, $13.00 per person. Social hour from 1:00-2:00PM and eat at 2:00PM. Let our Adjutant John Fredrickson (715-234-8050) know by 14 December if you plan on attending and how many people.

If you know of any member who is sick, please contact our Chaplin Bill Dent so we can send a little sunshine their way.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.
