24 August 2009

Dear Fellow Comrades,

Betty and I just returned from the VFW National Convention in Phoenix, AZ. I now know why the snowbirds return to Wisconsin for the summer months. Needless to say, the temperature was HOT, with highs of 105-111 each day. It did cool down in the evenings with lows of mid 80s. We were told upon arrival to drink lots of liquids, I hope they didn’t just mean water. We had a great time and met up with several of our old friends from around the US.

On Monday, President Obama attended the convention and addressed the membership. Later in the day, Actress/Singer Connie Stevens was awarded the VFW Hall of Fame Award and Gen Michael Hayden was presented the VFW Eisenhower Distinguished Service Award. Also Mike DeRosa (from Eau Claire) received an award for the donations Burger King has made to the VFW Unmet Needs Fund and VFW Foundation.  Later in the week, Astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Scott Carpenter received VFW Awards and addressed the membership. Also, WWE Sgt Slaughter received a VFW Award for all the things they have done for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Needless to say, it was a very enjoyable week for both Betty and I and we are both looking forward to the convention next year in Indianapolis, Indiana. It should be a lot cooler than it was in Arizona.

I am still working on a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help Deployed NGU families if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist. I now have two electricians who have volunteered. We sure could use some other help.

The Barron County ALL Veterans Picnic is being sponsored this year by the Prairie Farm & Haugen Legion Clubs. The picnic will be held 13 September Noon – 3:00PM at Prairie Farm Park. Take highway F south from highway 8. Turn right on highway A and follow the signs. Hope to see you there. Remember all food is provided and no alcohol is allowed.

Hi Comrades,

Our Adjutant was unable to attend our monthly meeting as he was taking care of other veterans’ issues so we had a short but very productive meeting this month.

We did have another new member join our chapter this month, Rhonda Nyhus of Cumberland. Hope we will see you at our next monthly meeting in September.

We had a lengthy discussion about holding some kind of fundraiser this fall. Bill Dent has gotten us a special price on chicken and also has sweet corn lined up. It was decide that we would hold a chicken and corn feed like we had two years ago. It will be on Saturday 05 September from 11:00AM- 3:00PM. We will need all members who can to be there to make it another great and successful fundraiser. Contact Bill or Bob is you want to help.

The Fall Conference will be held in Appleton, WI on 08-10 October. The Service Officer Training will be held on the 08th and will be followed the next two days with training for Adjutants and Commanders. There will also be several workshops on Social Security, TRICARE, and CHAMPVA to name a few. This is a great time to ask question and gain more information on the various programs available to all veterans. Currently Joe Anderson, John Fredrickson, Lenny Shier, Terry McNitt, Tom Johnson (Service Officer Training) and I are planning on attending. We will be discussing it more at our next meeting.

Our adjutant has DAV Raffle Tickets to help raise funds for the DAV Transportation Program. If any member would like to purchase or sell some tickets please contact John Fredrickson at 234-8050.

If you know of any other member who is sick, please contact our Chaplin Bill Dent so we can send a little sunshine their way.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.

Upcoming Events:

  • September 05  - Chicken & Corn Feed (Vets Center)
  • September 14  - Monthly Meeting
  • October 08-10  - Fall Conference (Appleton)

God Bless, Love Ya,
