August 2009 Scuttlebutt

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Dear Fellow Comrades,

I guess the biggest news this month is that our post once again attained the distinction of All State Honors Post at the state convention. This will make three years in a row that we have earned this award. There were only 14 posts in the state that received this award this year. I guess our post must be doing something right. Thanks go out to all the hard work of all the members.

On 12 July our post celebrated 75th years as a post. It was chartered on 12 July 1934. We had a great party at the Veterans Center on the 12th and if you missed it, you missed out on some great food. Greg & Cynthia Saylor did a great fantastic job of preparing the meal for us.

My term as District Commander is over as of the state convention. I know I will miss some of the comradeship of members but I definitely do not miss all the long nights getting paperwork done.

Officer Training was held at Wisconsin Rapids on 25 July and Commander Anderson, Quartermaster Puig and I attended the training. There is a lot of new information provided and it was a great time to ask questions.

Betty and I will be heading to the VFW National Convention to be held in Phoenix, Arizona, August 16-20, 2009. Hopefully we have better weather than we did in Orlando, FL last year during Tropical Storm Faye. Arizona in August, sure sounds like it will be hot.

All of the National Guard Units from our area are now in Iraq. I am still working on a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist. I now have two electricians who have volunteered. We sure could use some other help.

The Barron County ALL Veterans Picnic is being sponsored this year by the Prairie Farm & Haugen Legion Clubs. The picnic will be held 13 September Noon – 3:00PM at Prairie Farm Park. Take highway F south from highway 8. Turn right on highway A and follow the signs. Hope to see you there. Remember all food is provided and no alcohol is allowed.

**** If you know of any member who is sick or could use some sunshine, please contact Steve Clark at 715-719-0218.

Hi Comrades,

Another great meeting this month and it was nice to see a few more new members attending. Brain Senbusch drove down from Springbrook and attended his first meeting. We gained four new members this month. Melvin Harbort (Hayward), Harley Prell (Cumberland), David Runice (Hayward) and Roger Thorp (Spooner). Welcome aboard and we hope to see you at our August meeting.

At our July meeting, we had a lengthy discussion about holding some kind of fundraiser later this fall, possibly the middle of September. We are currently looking at possibly having another corn & chicken feed like we had two years ago if we can get the chicken. If not, it will be corn on the cob and possibly bratwurst. We will be discussing it more at our August meeting. Time goes by fast and we will need to make a decision at our next meeting.

The Fall Conference will be held in Appleton, WI on 08-10 October. The Service Officer Training will be held on the 08th and will be followed the next two days with training for Adjutants and Commanders. There will also be several workshops on Social Security, TRICARE, and CHAMPVA to name a few. This is a great time to ask question and gain more information on the various programs available to all veterans.

FREE Access to Wisconsin Start Parks and Trails. If you are a POW or 70 percent or greater permanent or temporary disabled you are eligible to received free admission. Check with the County Veterans Service Office for certification and details.

We currently have several items (walkers, portable toilets, wheel chairs, crutches, scooters and etc.) stored out in the Veterans Center garage. I recently talked to the DAV representative at King and they could always use some of these items. They will come up and pick up any items that we currently do not need. If we need any of these items in the future, we can always get them back. If you know of anyone that needs any of the items we currently have, please let us know so we can hold onto the item for you. Other wise, Bob Karpenske and Dick Powers will be sorting out what we don’t need and we will send them down to VA King Home. We are looking at sending the items down the end of August or first part of September.

If you know of any other member who is sick, please contact our Chaplin Bill Dent so we can send a little sunshine their way.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.

Upcoming Events:

  • August 10  - Monthly Meeting
  • September 14  - Monthly Meeting
  • October 08-10  - Fall Conference (Appleton)

God Bless, Love Ya

Yours in Comradeship,

Ben (Walking Eagle) Anderson
