20 March 2009

Dear Fellow Comrades,

I guess the biggest news this month is that Post 2204 Youth Essay Winner Sarah Mattes came in 1st place in Wisconsin and 6th place in National Level Competition. She will be will be receiving $4000.00 in bonds and a plaque at the VFW Department Convention to be held in June in Eau Claire. She will also be attending the 9th District Conference to receive her 9th District Awards.  If you happen to see her, please congratulate her on this great achievement. We will be presenting the post awards at a later date.

If you didn’t attend the March meeting, we held nomination of officers for the upcoming year. We will be holding elections at our April meeting. If you would like to hold an office, please be at our next meeting. We will open up nominations prior to elections, just in case someone else would like to hold an office. So far it looks like the same officers as this year.

At our February meeting, it was decided that we would hold our Poppy Drive on 02 May. Tom Puig has started distributing plaques to local business this month. We will need as many members as possible to assist this year. We will decide at our April meeting what time we will start.

9th District Spring Conference will be held on 09 May in Altoona. If you would like to attend, we will need to know at our April meeting.

All of the National Guard Units from our area are now in Texas for training prior to deploying to Iraq. It is now time for all members to help those who are left behind to assist them if any special needs do come up during their spouse’s deployment. I would like to get a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist.

9th District is still in 2nd place this month. We are currently at 95.23% and we need 194 members to reach our 100% membership goal. Post 2204, is at 103.54% with 7 members who have yet to pay their yearly dues. Maybe we can hit 110.00% this year. Remember, if you have not paid your dues, you will not be able to vote at meetings.

The VFW Department Convention will be held 24-27 June in Eau Claire. It would be a great opportunity for members who have never attended a Department Convention to attend and see what happens at Department Level and meet fellow comrades from around the state. We will discuss it more at our April meeting.

Our prayers go out to Duane Wittmann and other sick veterans. Hope you all have a speedy recovery.

**** If you know of any member who is sick or could use some sunshine, please contact Ted Kuchera at 434-3123.

We had a couple of new faces at the meeting, Richard Strickland attend his first meeting and also Daryl Coons who recently transferred in from the Hayward Chapter. We did get three more transfers this month, Terry McNitt (Spooner), Marvin Clark (Hayward) and Walter Pydo (Hayward). Welcome aboard and we hope to see you at our April meeting.

We will need as many members as possible to assist during this function. We still need door prizes, so please see what you can get donated.  We are planning on door prizes, a 50/50 drawing and regular raffle. Registration and social hour are start at 11:00 AM, lunch at noon and the meeting will start at about 1:15 PM. We will be discussing it more and finishing up the final details at our April meeting. If you have any ideas, please contact our Adjutant John Fredrickson. We are always looking for new ideas.

At our March meeting, it was decided that we would hold our annual Forget-Me-Not Drive on 25 April. This is one of our major funds raiser for the year and we need all members who can assist to help out. We will finalize times etc at our next meeting.

Also at our March meeting, we held nomination of officers for the upcoming year. Nominations will remain open until our April meeting at which time we will hold elections. Installation of Officers will be in May. If you would like to hold an office for the upcoming year, please attend the April meeting.

The DAV Department Convention will be held in Appleton, WI on 11-13 June 2009. Several chapter members will once again be attending the Convention. If you are interested in attending, be at our April meeting. We will be discussing it further then.
