August 2008 Scuttlebutt

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Dear Fellow Comrades,

This month has been another very busy one for me. I attended the National Flying Squadron Meeting/Training in Chicago on the 19th and it was very informative. Department Officers and District Commanders from all the states in the Big 10 Conference attended. A lot of information was provided and there are a lot of changes to several programs for the upcoming year. Some of the changes are how the posts are to report all the good things we do for the community. Several programs have been combined; also the requirements for All State & All American Awards have been changed. I will brief the membership at our September meeting.

I attend the Chetek parade on the 4th of July and they had a great turnout of Veterans in the parade. I also attend the dedication of the new Veterans Memorial in Bloomer on the 5th of July. They did a fantastic job on their memorial and used several of the ideas from our memorial in Rice Lake. If you get a chance, drive thru Bloomer and check out their memorial.

I want to thank Larry Anderson for the great job on the new float for the Rice Lake Veterans Center. Larry has attended 4 parades already and is planning on taking the float to several other local parades. He can always use some assistance. Please give him a call if you can assist.

The annual OTI “Officer Training Institute” classes will be held at Wisconsin Rapids on the 25-26th of July. Commander Anderson and I are planning on attending. Ben and I will also be attending VFW King Day on the 27th.

Betty and I will be attending the National Convention in Orlando, Florida 16-21August.  I will be arriving back in Wisconsin just in time to head to Fort McCoy for the picnic that the VFW Department of Wisconsin is sponsoring for the Army National Guard Unit. It will be a busy week.

On August 20 & 21 the VFW Department of Wisconsin will be sponsoring a picnic for all the Army National Guard Unit members at Fort McCoy. We will need lots of volunteers. If you are interested in assisting, please let Pete Breed (715-237-2470) or me know if you can assist and on which day.

I will be holding and informal 9th district get together at the Chippewa Falls post on

02 August. We will meet at 10:00AM, have a noon lunch and then go over to the VA Homeless Center for a tour at 2:00PM. Any member can attend this event. If you have any items to donate, please bring them along. If you need a ride, give me a call.

**** If you know of any member who is sick or could use some sunshine, please contact Ted Kuchera at 434-3123.

Hi Comrades,

We had a very short meeting again this month. There were only 9 members present. Joe Anderson was recovering from arm surgery and is unable to drive. Also, several of our DAV members are also AMVET members and they were all busy at the fair grounds getting the AMVETS food stand ready for the Barron County Fair. I hope they had a very successful fund-raiser. They too use all the profits from fundraisers for local veterans projects.

A short discussion was held regarding the retirement of both Sue and Barb from the County Veterans Service Office. They were a great asset to the County Veterans Service Office and all local area Veterans. We will miss both of them. We also discussed the CBOC and what items they need. They are always happy to get snacks for the veterans who have to fast prior to blood draws. If you have any extra cookies, they can always use them.

During the Department Convention held June12-15 2008, 4th District Chapters present also held a District Advisory Meeting. During this meeting our chapter was asked to hold the DAV 4th District Spring Conference in April 2009. We agreed and said that we will host the Conference. We had a great time last time we hosted it and I know we can have an even better conference this time. We will need all members to assist and start planning for it now. We will need to get door prizes and also start planning a meal. We will discuss this more at our next meeting.

At our 08 September meeting, we will be visited by the 4th District Commander Terry McNitt. Mark that date on your calendar and try to attend. I would like to have as many members present as possible.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.
