VFW March 2010 Scuttlebutt

February 25th, 2010

Dear Fellow Comrades,

Post Commander Anderson, my wife Betty and I all had a great time at the VFW Mid-Winter Conference in Appleton. A lot of information was gained by attending the various training meetings that were held during the conference. I would be more than happy to discuss what information was learned if anyone is interested.

It was a very quiet month with not a lot of action items to discuss. I have talked to the Auxiliary members and they are planning on holding a Loyalty Day Banquet at the post on 01 May 2010. Current plans are to honor our posts Yearly Honoree (name not yet released), Chuck Stene (Teacher of the Year) and Madison Glaze (First Place Winner of the Patriot Pen Essay Contest). We are still in the planning stages and I will hopefully have more information at our March meeting. I did hear that both Herb Zimmer and Denny Leuthner are doing great but I have not talked to them lately.

Patriot Pen Essay judging has been completed, Post Winners are as follows:

  • First Place - Madison Glaze
  • Second Place - Grace Schock
  • Third Place - Jordan Lundberg

At our March meeting, we will be holding nomination of officers for 2010-2011 and will hold elections at our April meeting. Any member who would like to hold an elected office, please attend our March & April meetings.

We are still working on the Scuttlebutt issue, we are still working on the exact cost to print and mail each copy. We are still discussing it and we believe it will be a bi-monthly mailing. We will discuss it more at our March meeting. We are continuing to update the web site for the Veterans Center. The web site is www.rlvets.org

DAV March 2010 Scuttlebutt

February 24th, 2010

Hi Comrades,

Not much to report again this month, as we had no meeting in February. Our next scheduled meeting for 2010 will be on 08 March 2010. At that meeting, we will be discussing and nominating officers for the upcoming 2010 – 2011 membership year. Elections will be held at our April meeting. Our adjutant informed me that he is running for the office as the DAV 4th District Commander in April. He has been the 4th District Vice Commander for several years and I know he will do a great job as Commander. He also informed me that he does not want the position as Chapter Adjutant as he will be on the road and missing several meetings. Is there any member who would like to take the position as Adjutant? Let the membership know at our March meeting.

We are still working on the issue of mailing out Scuttlebutts to all members. The Vets Center is trying a bi-monthly newsletter (for Legion members only). We are working on determining the exact cost per issue to print and mail the newsletter. We will be discussing it more at our March meeting.

The DAV 4th District meeting will be held in Ladysmith on 17 April. We will need to know at our March meeting who would like to go. We will need to make reservations prior to our April meeting. Lets have another good showing of members from our chapter.

If you know of any member who is sick, please contact our Adjutant at 715-234-8050. Our Chaplin Bill Dent is one of our snowbirds and should be down south enjoying the sunshine until spring.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.

Upcoming Events:

  • March 08, 2010 – Monthly Meeting (Nominations)
  • April 12, 2010 – Monthly Meeting (Election of Officers)

Letter from Capt. Johansen

Happy December Bulldog families!  I wish you all the best through the holiday season. We are going to be experiencing an exciting month as our replacements arrive and we depart Iraq.  Your Soldiers have done an outstanding job with this high-profile mission.  The daily grind has taken its toll on the Soldiers’ minds, and they are ready to get back to lovely Wisconsin.  The next few weeks will probably be the longest of the entire deployment because of the anticipation of the homecoming and reunion with family and friends.  This time can also cause some Soldiers and families to experience a bit of anxiety because of the major change in their lifestyle.  Please be patient with your Soldiers and I will stress the same to them.

As of right now, we are expecting to be back in Wisconsin around the middle of January.  We will spend a few days at Ft. McCoy to go through the demobilization process, which in itself is painful, but very important.  The Soldiers must focus on what needs to be done prior to being released back to you because of the long-term affect/benefits that will come from the demobilization process.  Once we leave Ft. McCoy, my intent is to send one bus to Rice Lake and two buses to New Richmond.  The FRG is putting together a short welcome home ceremony at both armories.  I have encouraged the FRG to keep the ceremonies short, because I know that at that point the Soldiers just want to go home.  It is an important piece for the communities to have some closure to the deployment as well.  The communities have provided tremendous support for your Soldiers through the entire deployment, and I feel it is important for them to have the opportunity to welcome your heroes home.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Businesses to decorate store fronts for homecoming.

By mid January, our National Guard Soldiers of Company B, Det. 1 will be returning.  We don’t have exact dates yet and we may only get a few days notice.  We would like to show our soldiers that we support what they have been doing for our country.   We are asking local businesses and homeowners to decorate their store front or front yards in support of their return.  Start thinking how you can welcome them home.  Watch for more updates in the local newspapers and radio.

Thank You for your support.

Dear Fellow Comrades,

Great news this month, our Rice Lake National Guard Unit made it home safely on the 17th of January. We had approximately 300 people attending the program at the armory. Yellow ribbons were made up prior to their arrival by the FRG and my wife Betty and tied up to light poles around the city. The City of Rice Lake put up American Flags on Main Street to welcome the troops home. Our Veterans Center Color Guard along with several other members from the VFW, Legion and Auxiliaries were at the armory for the ceremony. Market Place Foods, VFW, American Legion and both Auxiliaries donated food for the event. Thanks also goes to my wife Betty who helped coordinate all the food with Jean Malsom of the FRG and the ladies auxiliaries that helped during the event. If you missed the event, you missed out on a lot of great cookies.

The VFW 9th District meeting was held on 16 January at Altoona. Commander Ben, Herb Zimmer and I attended. During the noon meal, Chuck Stene was honored as the 9th District First Place Winner for the Teacher of the Year Award 6-8 grades. Sorry to say, Chuck did not win first place in state competition. Chuck will be honored again at our post during our Loyalty Day Banquet. Our Patriot Pen entries did not do as well as in the past and none of our entries took top honors. Our winners will also be honored at the Loyalty Day Banquet.

We did have a short but productive meeting this month. We did miss a few of our comrades and hopefully they are doing well. Herb Zimmer had a mild stroke on the 18th of January but returned home the next day and is doing well. Denny Leuthner is over at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis and is getting his knee replaced on the 21st. He said he wanted it done now so he can get back on the golf course for a little recuperation this spring.

We are still working on the Scuttlebutt issue, we are trying to resolve the issue of how much it actually cost to print and mail each copy. We are still discussing it and we might be mailing a bi-monthly or quarterly letter but not yet sure. We are continuing to update the web site for the Veterans Center. The web site is www.rlvets.org

The VFW 9th Mid-Winter Conference will be held on 05-06 February at Appleton, Wisconsin. Commander Ben Anderson and I will be attending. We will provide information gained at our February meeting.

Dear Fellow Comrades,

If you didn’t attend our Christmas Party, you missed out on a good time. We had 27 people attend this year and we had lots of great food. Thanks goes out to all the members who brought all the goodies. We held a very short side meeting to discuss upcoming events but no business meeting was held.

We are once again providing our local National Guard Troop Families with some Christmas cheer. We have been waiting to get information regarding a list of families in the Rice Lake area.  With all the new security proto calls in place, we have been unable to get any kind of list. We talked to Sgt Odenbreit and he will get the gift cards to all the members. This should help brighten up their Christmas Spirit.

The entries for Patriots Pen and Teacher of the Year Awards have been judged at district. Our Teacher of the Year entry (Mr. Chuck Stene) has been forwarded to Department level judging. The Patriots Pen Entries (Grace Schock, Jordan Lundberg and Madison Glaze) did not score that high this year and none of them were forwarded to department. We should have all the official rankings at our upcoming 9th District Meeting.

As was mentioned before the Scuttlebutt will no longer be mailed out monthly to all members. We are still discussing it and we might be mailing a bi-monthly or quarterly letter but not yet sure. We are continuing to update the web site for the Veterans Center. If you see any information in error, please let us know. We have posted all the monthly VFW & DAV articles from the past two years. We will hopefully be adding all the past Scuttlebutt articles as well. A calendar is also being worked on and hopefully that will be completed in the next couple of weeks. The web site is www.rlvets.org and has links to many other sites. If anyone has any questions, please contact me.

The VFW 9th District Mid-Winter Conference will be held on 16 January at Altoona Wisconsin. Currently, Commander Ben Anderson, Herb Zimmer and I will be attending. If any other member would like to attend and needs a ride, please give me a call and we can make arrangement for you.

I continue to work on a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help Deployed NGU families if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist. I now have three people who have volunteered. We sure could use some other help.

December 14th, 2009

Hi Comrades,

What a great turnout of members at our monthly meeting. We had 17 members present considering the bad weather. It is great to see that many members are interested in what our chapter is doing. We did have a very short meeting as we did not have much unfinished or new business to discuss. As normal for this time of year, not much happening to take action on. We did gain 1 new members again this month, Dean Johnson of Haugen who is transferring in from North Carolina. Welcome aboard; hope to see you at one of our next monthly meeting in March. We still need one more fully paid up member to be 100% for the year.

If you missed out on our Annual Christmas Party on 19 December you missed out on some great food and fellowship. We had 24 attend the party and all had a great time. Past Department Commander Roger Dorman was present and provided all members with the latest details of what is currently going on at the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs. It appears there might be some storm clouds starting to appear over Madison after the firing of Secretary John Scocos, happenings at King and some of the members who are currently on the board. We will know more in the next few months. If you want more details, please contact our Adjutant and he can fill you in on the particulars.

Remember that our December meeting is the last meeting of the year. Our next scheduled meeting for 2010 will be on 08 March 2010. At that meeting, we will be discussing and nominating officers for the upcoming 2010 – 2011 membership year. Election will be held at our April meeting. Where did the year go?

We are still trying to resolve the issue of mailing out Scuttlebutts to all members who do not have computers. We could possibly do a bi-monthly or quarterly newsletter, but that decision has not yet been made. We will be discussing it more at our March meeting. For now, we will be posting the monthly newsletters and calendars on the Rice Lake Veterans Center Website. Any member who has a computer can go to www.rlvets.org, click on the DAV logo and it will display all the information about our chapter. Click on scuttlebutt and you will be able to view all or selected issues. The VFW, Legion, AMVETS and auxiliaries will also have the same type of information available online. If you have any other information you would like posted, please let our adjutant know.

If you know of any member who is sick, please contact our Adjutant. Our Chaplin Bill Dent is one of our snowbirds and should be down south enjoying the sunshine until spring. Congratulations to Bill & Gail Dent on their 50th anniversary. Enjoy your winter down south.

Remember all our men and women serving all over the world to keep us safe. Say a big prayer for each and every one of them. May they all come home safe. God bless each and every one of you.

MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR

Dear Fellow Comrades,

We had a short meeting this month as not a lot of lengthy business items to cover. We will once again provide our local National Guard Troop Families with some Christmas goodies. We are just waiting to get information from the FRG Coordinator (Jeannie Malsom) regarding a list of families in the Rice Lake area.

We decided at the meeting that we would once again hold our Christmas Party on our meeting night of 15 December. The party will be for ALL VFW Members and spouses & VFW Auxiliary Members. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass. The VFW will provide all refreshments. Cocktails are from 6:00 – 7:00PM and we will eat at 7:00PM. I hope all members can make it, as it is always a fun party.

The annual Rice Lake Christmas Parade will be held on 03 December. Larry Anderson is asking for members to march and to meet at the Veterans Center by 5:30PM. You can also meet at Larry’s house at 6:00PM. Parade starts at 6:30PM.

The entries for Patriots Pen and Teacher of the Year Awards have been judged and our winners have been forwarded to district for judging. Teacher of the Year for Rice Lake is Mr. Chuck Stene. This years winner in the Patriots Pen are; Grace Schock, Jordan Lundberg and Madison Glaze. Final placement will be determined once we get the results back from district.  I want to thank the VFW Auxiliary, Sam & Deeann Samshal and my wife Betty for judging the entries.

As was mentioned in the last Scuttlebutt, we will no longer be mailing it out to all members after this issue due to the high cost of printing and mailing the paper. Maybe we will mail a quarterly letter but not yet sure. We are continuing to update the web site for the Veterans Center. I have asked all the veterans groups to provide us with updated information on meeting times and current officers. Thanks to my son Scott for updating the site.  We will be posting a monthly calendar and all the articles that currently appear in the paper will be on-line. We will also have an archives section so members can look at back issues if they need. The web site is www.rlvets.org and has links to many other sites. If anyone has any questions, please contact me.

I continue to work on a list of members who have special skills and would like to be available to help Deployed NGU families if the need would arise. (Plumbing, electrical, auto repairs, etc) Please let me know if you are willing to assist. I now have three people who have volunteered. We sure could use some other help.
